God sent Modern for my Surgery

On this particular day for once I experienced heavy traffic jam from my house in Likoni to Mombasa town. The ferry too had mishaps during the day and only one operated.I had booked a 9pm bus to Nairobi so that I could connect with my flight that morning to India for surgery. My husband was also ill and could not see me off at the bus terminus.

By 8.45pm I was still held on the other side of the channel not yet crossed to the island.By 9pm is when we started boarding the ferry, definitely my departure time.I tried calling the bus company x and all they could tell me is “basi laondoka harakisha”.I had actually asked my friends for some money for the surgery and travelticket was a well wisher gift for me.

I wished I could get a car and drive myself to Nairobi and avoid this horrible buses.I felt bad and even tears rolled down from my eyes.Hurriedly disembarked from the ferry boarded a tuk tuk and rushed to Mwembe. True to their words the bus had left.I tried to explain myself but no one was ready to listen to me.

My world was crumbling quickly and had no one to turn to.I inquired about the next bus departing at 10pm but they quickly told me its full. One of their loading boys sympathised with me and quickly told me to try Modern Coast. He even carried my bag and rushed where Modern coast office is just across the road.

He quickly signalled one of the staff at Modern offices dressed in blue and black and asked him to assist me.A big guy dark in complexion.I quickly explained myself and begged him to assist me.There was a bus almost leaving. Its number plate was KCJ 861.He quickly shouted the bus to stop.He asked me for money, rushed to the office and came back with a ticket. It was seat 44 but he talked to I think the driver to allow me seat on 12.The conductor a tall slim guy took my luggage and quickly put in the luggage compartment. As I walked in the bus it started moving. The driver showed me the seat as I sat my heart felt relieved.

The conductor told us what to do at Mtito and to belt up.He served us water and told us the wifi password.I tried to log into it but it never went through.I feared to ask again since I felt I was a bother. However,I called the conductor and asked him if we could make it in Nairobi by 6am.He was not sure but said “Tuombe Mungu”.I guess I sank in my seat and began praying.I was supposed to be at the airport latest at 6:30am for 9:30am flight.

I called my husband back home.I did not want to explain what had transpired because he was sick and my condition had also affected him.I told him I was fine and enroute. The journey was fine, the seat was comfortable as I reclined to watch some music video playing. The AC was fine or probably i needed more because of how I was sweating from that rush.

I could not sleep till when we reached Mtito.I rushed to the toilet and went back to the bus.I feared incase it left me.I stood next to it.People started coming back after a few minutes. The driver who the staff talked to approached me and asked if I was fine.I quickly nodded “yes”.I asked him if we will make it to Nairobi by 6am and he quickly told me he will try his best but he wont get inside the airport. It was ok with me at any point near the airport.I watched him now take over the steering and hooted.Someone had sat on my seat already.I approached him to ask why.He had uniform for Modern. He told me that was drivers seat and he was the driver who was driving initially.I quickly reckoned it was time to go back to my seat 44.

I went back and sat quietly.Right now I had a headache but took the little water I had remained with. The conductor again checked the bus with some tall guy too as it left Mtito. The bus moved and I felt like singing a song to God just how awesome He can be.I couldnt sing loudly because it was inside the bus.I hummed inside y heart.Time flew and by 5am we were at Machakos junction.I saw the many lights and lorries parked on the sides.

I approximated how long it would take to Nairobi and i wished it was 15mins journey. With each kilometre clocked I grew anxious.I had a tumour in my stomach and at this point it pained alot.I must say throughout the journey I was anxious, bitter with that bus company that left me with no solution and also thank full to God.Maybe because it was a Sunday morning and the blessings would shower my journey. At exactly 5:43am lights were switched on and the conductor who was sitting besides me asked me its time to disembark. It was the airport junction at JKIA.

The bus pulled on the side .I walked to the driver and said “Ahsante sana Mungu akubariki”.He smiled and told me “Kuwa na safari njema Inshallah”.The conductor had already removed my luggage from the boot and was waiting for me.He handed the bag to me and told me also “Safiri salama na ukirudi tumia Modern”.Those words will ever flow in my mind.

That journey was one to be remembered even now that I underwent successful surgery and back to my feet. Few days a go i told my husband the story and he told me “Modern ni kampuni imesoma”.We giggled abit but true I said one day I would share my experience. My surgery was made possible by Modern Coast.I got encouraged by the staff and bus people at Modern Coast.May God bless every one who made this successful.
